Golf courses in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is the largest ceremonial county in England. The county sits mainly in Yorkshire and the Humber region, but some of the county also falls into the North East region.

The North Yorkshire borders stretch from Middlesbrough down to Selby. In between, there’s plenty of countryside – about 40% of the county is covered by National Parks, including the North Yorkshire Moors and Yorkshire Dales.

In such a diverse county with a large coastline, undulating moors, rivers and lowlands, it’s natural that there’s a whole range of different types of golf courses. In total, there are 42 golf courses on offer in North Yorkshire

The best courses in North Yorkshire can be grouped around three settlements; York, Middlesbrough and Scarborough.

Starting with York, there are two of the best courses in the county just a short journey from the city centre. Fulford Golf Club is one of the most famous, having hosted 23 European Tour events from the 1970s – 1990s and the course ranks in England’s top 100. Less than 10 miles away, York Golf Club is another gem that ranks in the ranks in England’s top 100 under £60.

Heading North East, there’s a trio of golf clubs well worth visiting near Whitby and Scarborough. Scarborough North Cliff and Scarborough South Cliff are two excellent courses set on the cliff on the North Sea coastline. They are both a unique mix of seaside links style holes, set high on the cliffs with stunning views, coupled with more traditional parkland style holes on the other side.

Arguably though, the best of the county is Ganton Golf Club. It ranks in the UK & Ireland top 100, England Top 100 and even the World Top 100. It’s classified as an inland links course and even hosted the Ryder Cup in 1949.

Finally, heading up to Middlesbrough in the far north of the county, Cleveland Golf Club would be at the top of our list. Not only is it the oldest golf club in Yorkshire, but it’s the only links course. Middlesbrough Golf Club is also another great option, as a classic parkland designed by James Braid.
