Course overview
Situated in a natural valley within Kirkby Forest in Nottinghamshire, Notts Golf Club (more commonly referred to as Hollinwell) is recognised as one the country’s finest inland courses.
Hollinwell was formed in 1887 and moved to the current location in 1901. Willie Park Junior, a two time Open Champion, designed the 18 hole course layout.
Willie Park Jr is renowned worldwide for his design of the Old Course at Sunningdale, and there are similar traits in the Hollinwell design. The layout makes full use of the naturally undulating terrain and natural contours of the Valley of Kirkby Forest. It features fairways that sweep through wooded hillsides and others running through heather, fern and gorse clad valleys.
This means a good score requires both precision off the tee and accurate approach play with heather, gorse, bracken and pine in abundance to catch any shots that are offline.
And it’s not short. From the back tees the course measures in at 7,250 yards! It’s length ensures that the strength of challenge continues in the modern era of golf and is one of the reasons why Hollinwell has been selected to host both Regional and Final Open Qualifying on numerous occasions.
The club has also hosted other prestigious regional and national events such as the English Amateur Championship, Boys Amateur Championship and Brabazon Trophy.
Set over 400 acres of free draining sandstone play is also possible virtually all year round with greens that are dry, firm, and well-paced. Ensuring an enjoyable visit no matter what time of year.
