It’s easy to understand how you could fall in love with the game in such outstanding tall pine lined fairways. Much like it’s close neighbour Woburn, Leighton Buzzard is reasonably open for the most part with great defences in the form of the tall pines forcing you to take shaped shots and the pretty decent bunkerage round the fairway fringes and greens.
The course itself was gorgeous, the first nine to eleven holes in particular and the last 2 are picturesque and stunning! It does feel however as if 12 though 16 were added on later and felt a little squeezed into the course - I haven’t checked the architectural history but I’d put a small wager on this being the case. It’s does, for me at least impact the overall quality of the course. Although it’s still a real beauty.
The greens except for a few were perfect as were the bunkers, the rough too was well kept and it made for an enjoyable and productive round.
If you are in this neck of the woods, please come and play a round - you won’t regret it.
A fantastic example of my favourite, what I call woodland style courses. For me, tall pines just feels like home. Generally well established and natural. The only fault I could find was the transition in layout, from the 12th hole through to the 16th, where you almost felt like you had started playing somewhere new. Beautiful tree lined fairways, a few disappointing residential homes on a couple of holes but this is very common in modern suburban golf. I couldn't fault it.
The fairways were in great condition, well cut, not too long, not too short. Divot bags in operation and clearly the membership community are well drilled on this. The greens were good, not great but overall good, little disappointing on the back 9 where they looked as if they had been re-laid in the past 12-18 months and it hadn't taken well.
The rough was pretty rough and was the main defence of the course. The bunkers were well positioned, although in some cases not the greatest amount of sand.
A decent enough clubhouse, although a touch normal, but good overall facilities.
