East Riding of Yorkshire or simply East Yorkshire or East Riding (they all refer to the same place) is a county in the North of England. The county came into existence after the abolishment of the county of Humberside.

The county is marked by the Yorkshire Wolds, an area of rolling hills formed by marine limestone of glacial origin that have left an impressive North Sea coastline. 

Today, the coastline plays a big role in the county. The coast is used as a source for renewable energy and the chalk cliffs at Flamborough Head are a designated Heritage Coast and tourist attraction. 

From a golfing perspective, the chalk base provides excellent drainage and ideal conditions for golf courses. In all honesty though, East Yorkshire has the smallest offering of golf courses compared to the rest of Yorkshire. 

In total, there are 22 golf courses in East Yorkshire and the best of them can be found around the city of Hull.

Hornsea Golf Club is the pick of the bunch, to the North East of Hull, closer to the coast. The layout has an impressive list of architects, with both Alistar MacKenzie and James Braid having had input into the design over the course of its 125 year history. It’s a true test of golf with mature fairways and true rolling greens. 

Closer to Hull, there’s a trio of golf courses well worth a visit. Hull Golf Club, Hessle Golf Club and Brough Golf Club are all within 20 minutes of the city centre. They are all mature golf courses with well over 100 years of history.
