Birmingham, is a place rich in golfing history. 

The area has played host to four Ryder Cups, one of which was Europe claiming a historic victory (after a long spell) against the USA, alongside a number of European Tour events.

It’s a city with excellent communication by road, meaning that there’s a vast number of golf courses available to play within a short drive. Whilst that means there’s plenty of options, it can also be a little overwhelming. 

So, we’ve pulled together a list of our favourite courses in the area to help you decide where to tee it up next!

Best Golf Courses Near Birmingham

For a nice game of golf while in the Birmingham area, we recommend that you stop by one or more of these courses.

1. Moseley Golf Club

Sitting only 5 miles outside of the city centre, the Moseley Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course built in the 1920s. 

This course is known for its fast, rolling greens and challenging hazard features. You’ll get to play amidst a variety of trees and shrubbery, and any player will be able to fully enjoy a game here. 

Designed by Harry Colt, it’s a beautiful layout that has been recognised, regularly ranking as one of the best golf clubs in Worcestershire.

2. Fulford Heath Golf Club

Location: Tanners Green Ln, Wythall, Birmingham B47 6BH | Green fees: from £30

If you drive a quick 27 minutes from Birmingham, you’ll find yourself at the Fulford Heath Golf Club

This 18-hole parkland course is considered to be one of the premier courses in the area, with its subtle design and mature greens. 

While this course is particularly rewarding for strategic players due to the tricky little borrows in the greens, players of any level will be able to enjoy a game here.

3. Kings Norton Golf Club

Location: Weatheroak Hall, Brockhill Ln, Alvechurch, Birmingham B48 7ED | Green fees: from £50

Nestled into the middle of the countryside, Kings Norton Golf Club has a whopping 27 holes that can be played in 3 different ways, essentially creating 3 different 18-hole courses. 

The three loops of 9-holes (The Weatheroak, The Wythall and The Brockhill) are all located within the 220 acres of idyllic grounds of Weatheroak Hall. Parkland in nature, they are lined with mature oak, willow, and ash trees, with the club dating all the way back to 1892. 

However you choose to play the course, it reaches over 6,700 yards from the back tees, offering championship standard golf. 

If that wasn’t enough, there’s even a 9-hole academy par-3 course, alongside a driving range and excellent practice facilities. Situated just a quick 27-minute drive from Birmingham, it’s the ideal spot for a game.

4. Stourbridge Golf Club

Location: Golf House, Worcester Ln, Pedmore, Stourbridge DY8 2RB | Green fees: from £40

Just about half an hour outside of Birmingham, Stourbridge Golf Club was built in 1892 and is a gorgeously maintained parkland-style course. 

With a tree-lined fairway and fantastic course drainage, you can enjoy this course all year round.

The challenges of the course are varying enough with multiple types of hazards to keep you on your toes, so come out and enjoy a game while you’re in town.

5. Blackwell Golf Club

Location: Agmore Rd, Bromsgrove B60 1PY | Green fees: from £70

Originally set up in 1893 as a 9-hole course, and extended to 18 holes (and the present layout today) in 1923, the Blackwell Golf Club is about a half-hour drive from Birmingham. 

This traditional parkland course boasts 5 different par-3 holes, intricate greens, and deep bunkers that you’ll need to navigate. 

Despite its modest length, the course is not only recognised as not one of the best in the area but also comfortably features in England’s Top 100 courses and the UK & Ireland Next 100 list.

If you make the trip out here, you’ll easily be able to tell why it’s so highly regarded.

6. Olton Golf Club

A mature parkland course situated about 20 minutes outside of Birmingham, the Olton Golf Club offers an 18-hole course that is truly memorable. 

Set in 95 acres of beautiful countryside, the venue is regarded as one of the premier golf clubs in the West Midlands

With some of the best greens in the UK, this course features a variety of lovely scenery and plenty of challenges for any golfer. 

7. Robin Hood Golf Club

The Robin Hood Golf Club is full of lush fairways and mature trees, and it’s widely considered to be one of the most challenging golf courses in the Midlands

Sitting only 21 minutes outside of Birmingham, this 18-hole course is a parkland-style course with plenty of tests and trials for players of all levels. 

With a much-enjoyed course layout, this is a perfect spot for a game for anyone.

8. Edgbaston Golf Club

Located right there in the heart of Birmingham, Edgbaston Golf Club is a parkland-style, 18-hole course that features wide, sweeping fairways and plenty of nature to be enthralled by as you play. 

Set in magnificent surroundings with plenty of wildlife beside Edgbaston Pool, it’s hard to believe you’re just 5 minutes from one of the busiest city centres in the country. 

As you disconnect from the buzz of the city between the tree-lined fairways, tight greens and well-placed bunkers, golfers of any level will be lost in the moment, enjoying a game here. 

If you’re staying in Birmingham city centre, then there’s really no other choice!

9. Harborne Golf Club

Harborne Golf Club is an 18-hole course that features over 80 bunkers! It’s sure to test any golfer’s accuracy. 

Aside from the bunkers, the course contains a number of vastly undulating holes, fast greens, and a beautiful design that has barely changed since its creation. 

This course will be a hit for anyone who loves a challenge at only a 16-minute drive from Birmingham.

10. Handsworth Golf Club

About 3 miles from the centre of Birmingham city centre sits Handsworth Golf Club

This  mature 18-hole  parkland course was founded in 1895 and features gorgeous views of Staffordshire at the high points. 

The course itself has undulating greens, and some great water and bunker hazards that will test you and your game. 

11. Walmley Golf Club

Location: Brooks Rd, Wylde Green, Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield B72 1HR | Green fees: from £65

Founded in 1902, Walmley Golf Club is a parkland-style course just 12 minutes from Birmingham centre, on the edge of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield.

Reaching nearly 6,600 yards from the back tees, the layout protects itself over the course of its 18 holes with a variety of trees lining the fairways, amongst other hazards. 

While playing, there will be some beautiful and tranquil scenery along the way. The clubhouse with views over the course is the perfect place for a post-round pit stop!

12. The Belfry

The Belfry needs little introduction. But if you want to play somewhere that has hosted the Ryder Cup on four different occasions, then The Belfry is the place for you. 

Located just 17 minutes from Birmingham there are 3 different courses on offer at the venue (The Brabazon, PGA National, and The Derby), offering plenty of choice for a game. 

Each of the courses is unique. From the smooth greens of The Brabazon, to the inland links style of the PGA National, to the strategic hazards of The Derby, these 18-hole courses will provide ample challenges and allow you to walk in the footsteps of some of the game’s greatest!

13. Sutton Coldfield

Sitting in the heart of the country, only a few minutes from the city centre of Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield Golf Club is a heathland course full of natural beauty. 

It’s largely considered a hidden gem, offering excellent value for money, featuring in the Top 100 courses under £60.

With 18 holes, fast-draining greens, and plenty of bunkers to play around, it’s not hard to see why. Anyone of any skill level will thoroughly enjoy playing a round here.

14. Sandwell Park Golf Club

Only 14 minutes from Birmingham resides Sandwell Park Golf Club, a championship healthland course designed by H.S.Colt. 

Designed in the late 19th century, this mature course is known and loved for its fast greens and the embracing of the natural surroundings as a part of the course. 

Widely regarded as one of the best in the area, it’s been rewarded with the hosting of prestigious tournaments such as the England Golf Men’s County Championships.

15. Little Aston Golf Club

Location: Roman Rd, Streetly, Sutton Coldfield B74 3AN | Green fees: from £70

Little Aston Golf Club is a parkland course that lies about 20 minutes from Birmingham that was founded in 1908. 

This charming 18-hole course features angled greens, two lakes, sneaky bunkers, and more, and it has hosted plenty of tournaments in its time. 

It’s definitely regarded as one of the best golf courses in the area, but also features in the UK & Ireland Top 100 and England Top 100 golf courses too. You won’t be left disappointed if you make the trip out here.

16. South Staffordshire Golf Club

South Staffordshire

Location: Danescourt Rd, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton WV6 9BQ | Green fees: from £50

About half an hour outside of Birmingham, South Staffordshire Golf Club is a well-known parkland course with beautiful tree-lined fairways. 

Set in 160 acres on the Staffordshire and Shropshire borders, this 18-hole course was designed back in 1908 by the legendary Harry Vardon. The course has later had various tweaks from famous architects such as James Braid and Harry Colt. 

It still however remains true to its original design with multiple par-4s and requires plenty of player imagination to navigate to perfection. 

Known for its fast-running greens and uniquely challenging holes, the club is a hidden gem, featuring the Top 100 under £60 list. 

17. Hollywood Golf Club (Formerly Gay Hill Golf Club)

The outskirts of South Birmingham are host to the Hollywood Golf Club, an 18-hole parkland course that’s been around for over 100 years. 

Nestled into a valley with twin streams, this course manages to be playable year-round. 

Each hole poses its own unique challenges and rewards, so golfers will be able to experience something new at each turn.
