Although I grew up in the rival red rose county of Lancashire, it’s fair to say I’ve spent quite a bit of time playing golf in West Yorkshire! 

Never too far away, there was always a lure to play some of the best golf courses in Yorkshire. Some of the game’s best architects (such as Alister MacKenzie) have had influence on a number of golf courses in the region, and it always offers excellent value. 

During my time I’ve played a number of golf courses near Huddersfield. In this article, we’ll run through some of my favourites.

The best golf courses in Huddersfield

Each of the golf courses are located within half an hours drive of Huddersfield centre.

1. Huddersfield Golf Club

Huddersfield Golf Club, one of the North of England’s oldest and most prestigious championship courses, offers an exceptional year-round golfing experience.

The 6,500-yard championship course has hosted significant competitions over the years, including the England Men’s Team Championships and Yorkshire 1st Division Championships.  

You’re sure to find the course in excellent condition which boasts USGA standard greens and fast-running fairways.

With a history steeped in tradition, the club prides itself on providing a warm Yorkshire welcome to all members and guests, ensuring memorable moments.

2. Woodsome Hall Golf Club

Woodsome Hall Golf Club, celebrated for its centennial legacy, is a treasure among Yorkshire’s golf courses. It is endorsed by the late Peter Alliss as a hidden gem.

Nestled near Huddersfield and easily accessible from major motorways, the par 70 course is a rigorous test of skill with an emphasis on accuracy. 

Aside from the course, the club is housed within a stunning 16th Century Grade 1 listed clubhouse, offering exceptional food, cask beers, and hospitality. 

3. Crosland Heath Golf Club

Crosland Heath Golf Club showcases the timeless brilliance of Alister MacKenzie’s design, remaining largely unaltered a century after its opening. 

This Heathland style course boasts exceptional drainage with firm fairways, meaning it’s playable all year round. 

The course’s unique layout means that both par 5 and par 3 holes, as well as the initial four holes, face all compass directions! It’ll certainly challenge you to adapt to varying wind conditions.

The distinctive “tower” par 3s navigate around old quarries, offering a visually stunning and strategically challenging experience.

4. Howley Hall Golf Club

Howley Hall Golf Club, located near Leeds has been celebrated as one of Yorkshire’s finest championship golf courses since it was established in 1900. 

The layout (influenced by renowned architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie post World War I) is an 18-hole championship design boasting four of Yorkshire’s most challenging and engaging finishing holes.

Its reputation has earned it the honour of hosting the PGA Yorkshire Open Championship, marking its status among elite golfing venues. 

With a newly refurbished clubhouse to complement the golfing experience, Howley Hall extends a warm welcome to golf away days and societies.

5. Meltham Golf Club

Meltham Golf Club

Founded in 1908, Meltham Golf Club boasts a scenic yet challenging parkland course nestled against the beautiful Pennine Hills. 

Renowned as one of the finest golf courses in Huddersfield and all of West Yorkshire, Meltham offers guests a warm welcome and exceptional golf.

The challenging 6,259 yards of golf are meticulously maintained and are complemented by the stunning natural backdrop!

6. Bradley Park Golf Course

Bradley Park Golf Course is a distinguished 18-hole municipal course, celebrated for its picturesque, tree-lined fairways. 

You’ll find the charming parkland course conveniently located off the M62, near Huddersfield, Halifax, and Brighouse. This makes it a great option for those in Huddersfield and beyond. 

Alongside the course, the venue boasts a newly renovated 14-bay floodlit driving range and a welcoming clubhouse with views over the first tee.
