Course overview

Willingdon Golf Club is situated in a bowl at the foot of the South Downs. Like many courses in the area, the foundation is on chalk downland so naturally benefits form excellent drainage meaning the course is usually in good condition all year round. Sitting in the bowl, its also protect from the harsher weather meaning you can usually count on getting your round in. Designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie the course has a unique layout meaning you can tee off from either the 1st, 9th or 15th which are all next to the clubhouse. Each hole also has its own memorable features, none more so than the course's signature 5th hole, which has a row of railway sleepers guarding the green.

Willingdon Golf Club
Willingdon Golf Club is yet another of Sussex's vast array of fantastic downland courses, offering a challenging, yet enjoyable round. The course offers extensive views out to sea and over Eastbourne and beyond from some of the higher holes on the back 9.

The course proudly advertises the fact that it was redesigned by Dr Alistair MacKenzie (who went on to be course architect for Augusta National), and many of his trademarks including undulating, multi tier greens are present here.

As a Par 69, there are a couple more par 3s than you would normally expect (6 in total), and scoring well on the short holes can be crucial to building a good round here, especially as two of the par 3's are approximately 220 yards!

This was the second time I have played the course, and it is in fantastic condition, with the greens rolling true even later in the day. I managed to secure a 'hot deal' online, and my £19 green fee is excellent value and very much a bargain!

The course is hilly, and does make for a challenging walk, particularly on a warm day, so be prepared!

Eastbourne is yet another town with an abundance of golf courses located in the near proximity (of which I am still to explore!), but I feel that Willingdon Golf Club can still be considered a bit of a hidden gem!
