Whilst it’s just 30 minutes from London by train, Hertfordshire is actually counted as part of East England for the purposes of government statistics. It’s easily accessible from the Midlands and the North of England too with excellent motorway access.

Whilst being close enough to the capital (in time), but far enough (in terms of distance), means a large proportion of the county is protected by green-belt. 

This had led it to being one of the greenest counties in the country with varied terrain and countryside – the perfect setting for golf! 

In fact, over the past century, Hertfordshire has grown from a county with 10 golf courses when Hertfordshire Golf Union was first established to 58 golf courses in total. 

One of the best golf courses in the region is Ashridge Golf Club. It’s in a spectacular setting, in a beautiful National Trust forest with wildlife and mature trees. Through the round, the course offers some breathtaking views and generally the club oozes class throughout your visit. 

Hadley Wood is another popular choice, designed by Alistair MacKenzie (the architect of Augusta National). The course is a great example of an authentic MacKenzie design that have become loved all over the world. It features raised plateau greens (some of them two tired), strategically placed bunkers and tree lined fairways with undulations.  

But one of the great things about golf in Hertfordshire is the variety on offer. The Grove is another top course in the area, but is a heathland course. A fairly new course, opening in 2003, the layout makes the more of its natural surroundings and natural contours. This not only creates run off areas from the tee, but makes your approach shots tough, occasionally to raised greens.
