Golf courses in Greater London

Whilst there are a number of great golf courses in the city of London, the options certainly widen if you’re willing to travel a little further out.

The demand for quality golf from the capital’s near 12 million population ensures that there’s plenty of great golf courses, all easily accessible from the centre of this major city. And with the transport infrastructure of a city such the size of London, getting around is easier than you think.

We start our journey at Coombe Hill Golf Club, which is one of the few golf courses in Greater London that rank in England’s Top 100. Set a mile south-east of Kingston Hill, it’s a traditional golf club with the 18-hole layout reaching nearly 6,300 yards from the back tees and a par of 71.

The Addington Golf Club is another course that makes an appearance on England’s Top 100 list. Located in Croydon, it’s a heathland lovers paradise! Standing on the pine and gorse lined fairways, you’d find it hard to believe that you’re just a few miles from the centre of the capital.

The course, which remains largely unchanged from the original layout in 1914, offers stunning backdrops with the mature pines and purple gorse throughout the round. It provides a little oasis from the noise of the city of London.

The Shire London is famous for being England’s only course designed by the man himself Severiano Ballesteros. Located in the north, in Barnet, the club has already become a “must play” in Greater London despite only opening in 2006.

In great Seve fashion, the course design has six par 3’s, six par 4’s and six par 5’s – a rarity in modern golf course design.

Outside of these picks, there are plenty more top golf courses. Fulwell and Ealing Golf Club are two other great tracks well worth a mention, but there are a total of 69 golf courses to choose from in Great London.
