Three areas make up the golf classification of North East England – County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne & Wear.
It’s fair to say that the North East has a bigger reputation for its football passion than its golf courses, but that shouldn’t dissuade you from looking here as an option for a great golf course.
With close to 100 golf courses packed into the North East, there are plenty of golf to choose from.
Northumberland is the largest county in the North East from a golfing perspective. The county is home to some of the best courses too, having staged a number of European Tour events at both Close House and Slaley Hall.
Heading towards the east and to the coast, there are some hidden links gems waiting to be discovered too. Goswick Links is a England top 100 course and Dunstanburgh Castle features in the top 100 courses under £60 ranking.
County Durham is next, and Hartlepool may have gained a cult status thanks to Jeff Stelling, but it is also home to the earliest known golf course in the region – Seaton Carew Golf Club.
Golf dates back to 1874 at this club, making it one of the oldest clubs in the country. It’s a fabulous links course with a unique twist – it has 22 holes, making up five different potential layouts!
Finally Tyne & Wear is the best choice for golfers looking for high quality golf at excellent value. The three top picks in this county; The Northumberland, Whitley Bay Golf Club and Gosforth Golf Club are all excellent choices with very reasonable green fees.
Or of course, with the famous Geordie hospitality on offer, there’s the option of having a city break. Whatever you do, don’t overlook the North East as an option when looking for your next golf trip.
