Golf courses in Tyne & Wear

Tyne & Wear is a metropolitan country in the North East of England. The county is sandwiched between Northumberland to the north and County Durham to the south and is situated around the mouths of the River Tyne and River Wear (hence the name).

There’s plenty going on in the region with some of the North East largest urban areas Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and North and South Tyneside falling within the county boundaries.

From a golfing perspective, there are 22 golf courses in Tyne & Wear.

The Northumberland Golf Club is not just one of the best courses in Tyne & Wear, but in the whole North East of England.

The course was designed in the golden age of Colt and Braid. It’s a good challenge for all levels of golfers and uniquely plays alongside Newcastle Racecourse. It offers excellent value too, featuring in the top 100 courses under £60.

Heading further east towards the coast, you’ll find another gem in Whitley Bay Golf Club. Various points of the course are less than a few hundred metres from the coast, but the layout is more of a parkland-heathland mix than a links course.

From the back tees it stretches to nearly 6,600 yards, challenging and long enough for the course to have been host to a European Tour event in the 1970s.

Gosforth Golf Club is our final pick in Tyne & Wear. Just five minutes from Newcastle City Centre, it’s a popular choice for those staying in the North East capital and fancy an enjoyable but convenient round of golf. With green fees starting from less that £30, it’s also a bargain.
