Golf courses in Northumberland

Northumberland is the most northerly county in England, set in the north east corner of the country.

The county has imported golf from its Scotland neighbours, developing into one of the most popular regions for golf, with plenty to offer on and off the course.

Sparsely populated with immense areas of countryside (some of it protected), most of the county remains untouched. Northumberland is also flanked by the North Sea to the east, meaning that there’s a mixture of fine links courses and parklands in this region.

Throw in fun, popular cities such as Newcastle, it’s easy to see why many chose the area for golfing getaway (you can check our favourite golf courses in Newcastle here).

In total, there are 33 golf courses in Northumberland, and they are of high quality. Recognised by the European Tour, they are accustomed to stopping here for various tournaments over the years, most recently at the newly renovated Close House for the British Masters.

The Lee Westwood Colt Course (who also was host of the British Masters here), only opened up for play in 2011, but has quickly established itself as a top course in the region, also reaching the top 100 in England rankings.

Slaley Hall (Hunting Course) is another course with European Tour pedigree having hosted the Great North Open from 1996 – 2002. A championship layout, it’s a challenging course stretching to 7,000 plus and has been described as the “Gleneagles of the North East” and “Woburn of the North”.

Away from the countryside, as you make your way to the coast, you’ll find some of Northumberland’s magical links.

Although it doesn’t have any European Tour connections like some other courses in the county, Goswick Links is arguably the top pick. The course holds all the other accolades, featuring in the UK & Ireland Top 100, England top 100 and also being selected as an Open Qualifying venue.

Whilst other links such as Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnmouth Village Golf Club may not have quite the same prestige, they are examples of some of the great links options in the area.
