West Yorkshire is an inland county in the North of England. It’s mainly an upland county too with the moors of the Pennines and areas of the Peak District falling within its borders. 

The county is home to some large settlements including Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield. They are well connected with other areas of the UK via. two major motorways, good rail connections and Leeds Bradford Airport, meaning there are plenty of options to easily reach the region. 

Whilst West Yorkshire is famous for being the home of Rugby League in England, the county offers plenty from a golfing perspective with a whopping 82 golf courses. 

Within that are not just some of the best golf courses in Yorkshire, but some courses which rank highlighly in the Top 100 in the UK and even in the World Top 100. 

Alwoodley Golf Club is the course that makes the World Top 100, and for good reason. The course is a heathland-moorland mix, with gorse and heather lining the springy-turfed fairways.

Constructed in 1907, it’s considered the original MacKenzie design before he went on to design some of the best golf courses in the world including the likes of Augusta National and Cypress Point.  

Just a short drive down the road from Alwoodley, you’ll come to another moorland course, Moortown Golf Club. Moortown ranks in both the UK & Ireland Top 100 and England Top 100 lists and is considered one of the best inland courses in the UK.

It’s another fine creation of Dr Alistair MacKenzie who has had a fairly large influence on a number of courses in the region. The course also has a place in the history books as the first venue in the UK to hold a Ryder Cup, back in 1929.

Outside of these two stunning courses, there are plenty of other great options in West Yorkshire. Some of the golf courses around Leeds offer excellent value and a spectacular round of golf including the likes of Moor Allerton Golf Club, Sand Moor Golf Club, Huddersfield and Headingley.
