Golf courses in Lancashire

Lancashire has to be up there as one of the UK’s best regions for golf.

Golf became the sport of choice for the people working in this commercial and industrial powerhouse in the North West of England from the beginning of the 20th century. As a result a number of courses began to spring up in the county.

Today, Lancashire is home to 66 golf courses and is packed with some of the best links courses in the country, if not the world.

Just up the road from some of the world famous links courses in Merseyside, you’ll find an equally good standard across England’s “Golf coast”.

This includes heavyweights such as Royal Lytham St Annes and Royal Birkdale, two courses that are arguably up there as two of the best on the current Open Championship rota.

Other links courses in the same area such as Hillside, Southport and Ainsdale and Formby Golf Club all feature in the top 100 courses in the UK & Ireland, some in the top 100 in the world. (Most of these are situated in Merseyside but affiliated to Lancashire Golf Union).

Due to the high standards, and great links terrain you don’t have to spend a lot of money for a high quality round of golf.

Further down the Lancashire coast there are a number of other options to suit a smaller budget with the likes of St Annes Old Links, Lytham Green Drive and Fairhaven all close by to each other and all excellent courses within their own right.

As you head further inland, you’ll start to come across gems such as Pleasington and Lancaster golf club, you’ll soon start to realise why Lancashire is one of the top UK destinations for golf holidays.
