The North West of England really is a golfer’s dream. OK, the weather may not always be the most reliable, in fact it’s pretty much unpredictable, but that only adds to the romance of the area.
Golf really started to develop here as one of the preferred sports during the beginning of the 20th century when the North West of England started to become a commercial and industrial powerhouse.
The explosion of golf means that today, there are over 260 golf courses to choose from in the region. And each county within the North West offers something slightly different. There’s everything from some of the world’s best golf courses, down to enjoyable local 9 hole courses.
But we start with “England’s Golf Coast”, which is the star attraction in the region. Within a 30 mile stretch on the Irish Sea coast, you have the option to tee it up in the footsteps of some of your favourite golfers at Open Championship venues (Royal Lytham St Annes, Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool) in Lancashire and Merseyside.
It’s not just the Open Championship venues either. The “Golf Coast” is packed with 12 of the best golf courses in Britain, containing some of the best links courses in the world.
If you prefer something a little more low key, areas such as Cumbria is home to many of the UK’s hidden gems and a selection of the Top 100 under £60 rankings.
Off the course, there’s also plenty to do in a region famous worldwide for its global impact on music and sport. If a night out after a round of golf is more your scene, then head to Greater Manchester where you have great golf courses and great bars.
You’re guaranteed to find something for you, and who knows, you may even appreciate the sun a little more after your visit.
