Surrey is one of the country’s most affluent counties located in the South East of England, close to London. 

It’s a privileged area of the country in a number of aspects. Naturally it’s one of the most beautiful places in the UK. It has the highest proportion of woodland of any county and also is home to the Surry Hills which were one of the first areas in the country to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 

But perhaps the most impressive natural feature that will interest most golfers is the terrain. A large proportion of Surrey is built on sandy healthland terrain which is free draining ground, providing excellent conditions for golf courses. 

And there’s plenty of them! There are 128 golf courses affiliated to the Surrey Golf Union. 

But it’s not just the quantity of golf courses on offer in Surrey which makes it arguably the best county for golf in England. It has more courses than any other county in the UK & Ireland and England Top 100 course lists. 

Not only that, but it also features a number of bucket list courses that feature in the world top 100. So arguably, Surrey is not only one of the best areas for golf in England, but also the world. 

Sunningdale is probably the most famous course in the region. The club is technically in Berkshire, but is affiliated to Surrey Golf Union, and so features in our Surrey index. The Old and New courses make up two of the best golf courses in the county. 

The Old in particular has all the accolades. It’s recognised as one of the best inland golf courses in the world. It ranks as the second best course in England, and is in the top 25 world golf courses. 

Wentworth is another club with worldwide fame, with the West course playing host to the annual European Tour BMW PGA Championship. It has also staged a Ryder Cup, World Match Play and Seniors Masters. What more could you ask for?
