Cheshire is a rural county between the North of Wales and the Peak District in the North West of England.
It’s a highly sought after place to live thanks to its rural tranquilness but close proximity to major cities, Manchester and Liverpool. This also makes it a popular place for a golf trip with so many options both on and off the course.
Using Manchester or Liverpool as a base, you have access to a wide variety of excellent golf courses, with over 60 golf courses in the county of Cheshire.
Amongst those are some of the best examples of inland courses in the country. And there’s no better example than Delamere Forest Golf Club, a top 100 course in England and England Golf Championship Venue.
Sandiway Golf Club is another inland course that features in the top 100 in England rankings. A high quality heathland course, it’s known as the “Surrey of the North”, thanks to its natural beauty, tree lined fairways and many dogleg holes.
The Mere, designed by James Braid and George Duncan is one of the most underrated courses that not only competes with the best golf courses in Cheshire, but in the North West. The championship golf course has held Regional Open Qualifying and offers amazing value for money.
But despite the county’s excellent inland golf course offering, it’s a course on the small coastline of Cheshire that takes all the accolades. Royal Liverpool, also known as Hoylake Golf Club, is one of the 9 courses on the current Open Championship rota, and features in both the top 100 in the UK & Ireland and top 100 in England rankings.
It’s statistically one of the lowest scoring at Open Championship venues. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy! From the forward tees it’s more manageable, making it one of the best places to trace the steps of some of the game’s greats who have won here. A list that includes the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy!
